(Syracuse NY) SAGER KNITTING GOODS: FOUNDED IN 1885 BY ABRAM
HENRY SAGER AND HIS SONS. RUN BY HIS DAUGHTER S. JOSEPHINE SAGER. FROM NOTES OF
MARJORIE KOEHLER- THEY MADE BABY BONNETS, SWEATERS, BOOTIES AND LEGGINGS. RENA GREEN
TROMBLEY TOLD MARGE THAT SHE AND ETHEL GREEN BALLARD WOULD GO THERE WHEN THEY WERE LITTLE
GIRLS TO CUT RIBBONS TO LENGTH FOR THE BOOTIES AND BONNETS. RENA SAID THAT THEY LIKED
GOING THERE AS THEY WERE GIVEN BITS AND PIECES OF RIBBONS.

NOTES: From descendant and fellow
researcher/cousin Ian Morgan: A summary on Cornelius Cornelissz van Voorhout
(ABT 1621-1669), son of Cornelius Segerse Egmont van Voorhout (ABT 1599-November 1683) and Bregje Jacobsen
(1598-ABT April 1667)Cornelis Cornelisz van Voorhout sailed to the new world with his parents and siblings aboard the
"Het Wapen van Rensselaerswyck" in 1643. He appears to have been a bit of a troublemaker. In January of 1651
Cornelis was summoned to appear before court to answer charges of assualt and battery. This Cornelis
Cornelisz is probably the same person as "jonge Cornelis seegersen" and "jonge kees" mentioned in
various accounts in 1656 and 1657 Between January 31, 1652 to January 31, 1658 he was
paying an annual rent of f100, apparently for six
morgens of land in Greenbush formerly occupied by Christoffel Davids. In 1661 he received an Indian
Deed for land extending from the Vlamans Kil south of his houses towards the palisades of the farm occupied
by Ellert Gerritsz, including one half of Bevers Island. Some time after this it is likely that he removed to
New York, as the marriage of his two sons, Seger and Jacob, are found among the records of the New York
Dutch Church. These marriages occurred in 1678 and
1686 respectively, and the names as given are Jacob Corn. Van Egmont and Seger Corn. Van Egmont. There is
no further indication that either the name of Van Voorhout or Van Egmont was carried down to later
generations in this branch of the family.

Settlers of Rensselaerswyck, 1630-1658 In A. J. F. Van

Bulletin, History, Number 7.
Cornelius Seger Van Voorhoudt, the first settler, came to Berwick, now
Albany, in 1642 and succeeded Vander Dunk on the farm called Welyesburg on Castle Islands.
The records of Albany show the descendants of Cornelius Seger to have filled places of
trust in the city gov't as well as the military service of the country during the
Revolutionary and Indian wars. They were among the earliest settlers of Albany, NY.
The Sagers were a prominent family in Syracuse, NY. Several are mentioned in the 1924
Onondaga Encyclopedia of Biography published by the Onondaga Historical Association.
Biography- from a posting on Onondaga County, NY biographies by Kathy Crowell from 1998 of an original biography published in 1896 Onondagas Centennial: "The ancestral home of the Sager family of Syracuse was Amsterdam, Holland. The American ancestors of George J. and A. Park sager came over in the ships of Patrone Killen Van Rensselaer, and were among the earliest settlers of Albany Co., NY. They are of the stock of sturdy Dutch traders, employed by the West India Company, who settled New Amsterdam and later in the beginning of the 17th century, worked their way up the Hudson to the head of tide water at Albany for the purpose of adventures and commerce with the Indians. The family names appear in the annals of Albany as early as 1642. The struggles of the people at this period with the French and Indians present an interesting history and produced conditions which tended to develop the Dutch character along natural lines and made a fearless, sturdy, honest and industrious people...The first official recognition of Sager, as the family name occurs in the case of Thomas and John Sager, cousins, is on the company rolls of the Revolutionary War. .. Jacob Sager, son of George, and a descendant of Cornelius Segers and father of George J. and A. Park Sager, came to Syracuse 6-1-1847 with his wife and six children...Evert Seager, grandfather of Jacob Sager, was a private in Co. John Harper's regiment of NY militia in the Revolution in 1780. Thomas Seager, uncle of Jacob, also served in that war in the 6th company of the 1st regiment of special levy for frontier duty and died while so engaged 10-18-1778. In consequence his heirs were entitled to 500 acres of the military tract and on 9-13-1790, lot 19 in Tully was issued to his sister, Syntie Sager. George J. and A. Park Sager received a common school education, and early entered upon their business career. George J. enlisted in the 149th NY Volunteers in 8-1862 and served until the closed of the war, being connected part of the time with headquarters, 3d Brigade, 2d Division, 12th and 20th Army Corps. He was a member of the Army of the Potomac, the Army of the Cumberland and the Army of Georgia and was brevetted 2nd lieutenenant of NY Vols. for gallant and meritirious service. To A. Park Sager belongs the credit of starting in Syracuse and industry which today employs nearly 3000 people, mostly women in and about the city in the manufacture of fine hand made knit goods in silk, Angora and worsted. They are also engaged in the importation of goods in their lines and have a trade extending from Boston to San Francisco. "
Biography- from 1924 Onondaga Biography, vol 15: Three quarters of a century ago the Sager name was brought to Syracuse, NY by Jacob Sager, the father of four sons, three of whom became knit goods manufactureres of importance, and the fourth son settled in Cortland. Three sons served in the Civil War, and all were men of ability and character. All have now passed away, the female line now perpetuating the Sager name in the knit goods industry(S. Josephine Sager).
